Song of the Week #1

Sleigh Bells - Infinity Guitars

This track deserves to be played loud. On headphones. Be careful of becoming deaf at 2:05.

Sleigh Bells are not someone you would normally expect me to enjoy, but they get what they are doing perfectly right. Especially on this song.

3. The Louvin Brothers - Tragic Songs Of Life

Previous Reaction: Never heard of them
Post Listen: Great harmonies, up and down song quality
Will I Listen Again: Yep, especially to "In the Pines"
Harriet's Response: "Oh yeah baby rock and roll"
Teddy's Response: Silence

Until I read this book, I'd never heard of these guys. But they were tops. I'm not really a fan of country and bluegrass - that could be summarised as "I really hate the twangy crappy country" and "some bluegrass is ok". (More bluegrass I love later - #890 if you really care). Harriet listened to this one with me and agreed that the harmonies are great but it's a little too country. The stand out track is this old standard made famous by Lead Belly (there's no video on this, it's just the audio):

And later covered by a band on album #747 (the Louvin Brothers is much better than that version)

I'll definitely listen to this one again, especially "In the Pines". There's no more Louvin Brothers in the 1001 Albums, which I think is a bit disappointing - I'll have to look up some more of their catalogue.

Baked Chips

Every two weeks we (well, usually Cass and the children) go to a friends place to pick up a box of organic fruit and veg from a friend that organises a co-op. It's great value, and we don't tend to need to buy a great deal of vegetables outside this little arrangement (although sometimes we need additional fruit for children's lunch boxes). One of the items that we almost always get in the box is about 1kg of potatoes. Now, Cass doesn't really like to eat a lot of potato, so this proves a challenge. So, if you have any potato-based vegetarian recipes you could try shooting them out way and I might give them a spin. One of the recipes that I have found that everyone will eat is for oven-baked chips.

Ingredients
Potatoes
Oil
Seasonings to put on chips. I usually use, salt, pepper, fresh rosemary from the garden, sumac and dried thyme leaves.

Method
Get some potatoes. To feed our family I used this many:

I then scrubbed them so that all the dirt was gone (oddly enough). You could peel them if you want, but that seems awfully labour-intensive for basically no purpose:

Then you take the potato and cut both ends off and stand them up:

Cut 'em. The potato I'm using in these pictures is pretty small, so you can see that I've just cut them both ways until the chips are about the right thickness for the audience (this took me some trial and error). About this time I tend to put the oven on to pre-heat at about 220c.

Once they are all cut up, chuck them in a bowl. Add as much seasoning as you like. You need to put in some oil at this stage, so they've all got some coating. Helps the herbs and seasonings stick to the potato too.

Then put them on baking trays. I'm only using tin foil here because we're out of baking paper

(the picture on top is a little blurry because I got oil on the lens from the cooking).

Chuck them in the oven for about 45 minutes, turning after about 25 or 30. I generally give them a shake rather than worry about turning each individual chip. Then they'll be done, and the next thing you need to do is to completely fail to take a photo for your blog. I'll try to remember next time. Anyway, the family ate them all and were happy, and now we have fewer of those pesky potatoes lying around...

2. Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley

Previous Reaction: He's alright
Post Listen: He's the King
Will I Listen Again: Possibly
Harriet's Response: "Oh yeah baby rock and roll"
Teddy's Response: Silence

"Elvis was a hero to most/But he never meant shit to me..." - Public Enemy, "Fight the Power"

I've always understood Elvis' place in the pantheon of rock and roll music. But, frankly, as a child in the 70s Elvis was just a crazy dude in a jump suit, whose younger self appeared in a whole bunch of crappy movies shown on TV on Saturday afternoons. I don't think I've ever actually managed to listen to an entire album of The King's music.

So, I put this one on thinking that it might be pretty good, but expecting it to be fairly old school and not very interesting. Turns out I was pretty much bang on. The album cover is certainly iconic having been co-opted for another iconic cover:

(Pssst: "London Calling is one of my favourite albums, more of that when we get to page 436)

It has some classic tracks: "Blue Suede Shoes", "Blue Moon" which are great. But the real winner is "Trying to Get to You", here represented in a great version from his 1968 Comeback Special:

I wish the entire "Elvis Presley" album was that good, it's amazing to hear the difference in sound quality from the 1956 studio album to the 1968 live recording.

1. Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours

Previous Reaction: None
Post Listen: Zzzzzzzzzzzz
Will I Listen Again: Hell No
Harriet's Response: Zzzzzzzzzz
Teddy's Response: Zzzzzzzzzz

So, I've never been a fan of Sinatra. In fact, I've always wondered what the fuss is about. And I still don't know. If I need a cure for insomnia, this might be it.

There's more of Frank coming up, so maybe I'll find out why he's so revered later. Not a good start to the 1001 Albums experiment.

This

After a number of aborted attempts, I have decided to start a new blog. Hopefully I will keep it up to date.

Right now I have a number of things that I'm intending to blog about here. Notably:

With the last one, I decided to listen to every single album in the book and write what I think. There's some interesting stuff in there, much that I've heard before and much that I haven't. Additionally, I am intending to listen to that with the family and see if I can get any response. So far, not much, but it will take us a while to get the 1001 albums done. I have the 2005 edition, and have no real interest in upgrading. Maybe when I get to the end I'll extend it a little to add the albums released since my book was released.

Also I'm going to start this quitely, because I'm not sure I'm actually going to update it ;)
